Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!
Welcome to Riverside to all our new students and welcome back to my students from last year. I am so happy to have your child in my ESL classroom. I look forward to working with you and your child during this school-year.
It is my sincere desire that your child enjoys an enriching and successful school year. It is, therefore, my responsibility and goal to provide your child with a well-managed, well-structured learning environment.
Below, you will find more detailed information about our classroom and district activities and procedures.
Report Cards Report cards are issued quarterly during the academic year and are available to the parents in Genesis. Report card grades, in full year courses and academic quarter classes, are numeric and will be used to determine the yearly average for the student.
Middle School Grading
93 – 100 A Outstanding work
85 – 92 B Mastery of Course Content
75 – 84 C Satisfactory Achievement
70 – 74 D Minimal Achievement
69 - & below F Failure to achieve minimal requirements
50 Indicates the child has done no work and
is not cooperating in class or completing homework

Needed Materials – Please bring these the first day of school!
Students should always come to class with a pencil, individual notebook and folder. Materials like scissors, glue and color pencils will be available in my classroom.
In ESL, it is very important that students read regularly. They will be expected to read for 30 minutes every night, and write a paragraph summarizing what they read. Other homework is rarely assigned; however, practice may be necessary for your student.
Students shall be responsible for obtaining and completing make up assignments and tests after absences. Students shall receive a zero for any assignment or test not made up within the allotted time. All work must be made up within two days after the student returns to class unless other arrangements are made.
ESL Class Objectives and Goals
In this class, we will work to improve your student’s English language abilities in the following ways:
- Speak and write with more abundant academic vocabularies.
- Locate facts, details, events, characters, etc., in reading material.
- Combine facts, details, events, characters, etc., to determine sequence, cause/effect, and other organizational patterns.
- Connect facts, details, events, characters, etc., to inferences and implied meanings.
- Locate, combine, and connect, facts, details, events, characters, to analyze the author’s writing.
- Read, write, speak, and comprehend spoken and written language through practice.
